Meeting with John Meadows of Lugo Tailored Lifestyle, NYC

I had the honor of meeting John Meadows, the owner of Lugo Tailored Lifestyle, this week in his Nolita, NYC store. He made quite an impression on me. John is one of the most energenic and professional business owners I have ever met. (I don't know anyone in the business that responds faster to emails than John.) His business background is mainly restaurants, including opening a new Lugo-based restaurant called Lugo Caffe this year.

I have been to Lugo a few times since it's opening last year. I admire the store's set-up, from the custom shirt cabinet to the spacing between mechandise on the walls and cabinets. The store feels surprisingly spacious for a boutique.

Lugo specializes in high quality shirts utilizing Italian tailoring. The store focuses on style, not fashion, by offering classic fabrics with a youthful cut.
The quality of Lugo's shirts are comparable, if not better, to any of the popular Italian names (Gucci, Borrelli, etc.). The collars come in two varieties - standard and wide spread. For the cuffs, Lugo offers both french cuff and button options. The shirt prices range from $175 to $250, a great value for high quality shirts.
John himself was wearing a simple tailor-fit blue suit and blue shirt combo. He had an aura of subtle confidence, just like the Lugo shirts he sells.
Lugo also sells a nice variety of accessories including ties, belts and pocket squares.

I originally approached John via email because I wanted to feature Lugo in my blog posts. I told him that I was interested in doing a "Lugo - Designed by Vittorio J" line of ties. He is open to this idea and I will be working on designs that suits his taste. I'm really excited about this so stay tuned!

Best Custom / Bespoke Tailors in New York

Today I want to talk about my two favorite custom tailors in New York City. Ok, I must admit, this will be biased feedback since both Michael Andrews Bespoke (http://www.michaelandrewsbespoke.com/) and Imparali Custom Tailors (http://www.imparalicustomtailors.com/) carry Vittorio J neckties exclusively. However, I have visited and talked to quite a few of the NYC tailors and these two by far offer the best combination of products and service.

What makes these two places stand out the most is the passion the owners have for their business. Both Mike from MAB and Matt from Imparali love to dress men. They are both perfectionist and will not allow ANY of their customers to leave their studios without being happy. Imparali wants to be the "Brooks Brothers" of the custom business and mostly targets conservative men that aim for comfort over pure looks. MAB on the other hand is a designer tailor. Both offer thousands of fabrics for suits and shirts (ahem..and of course VJ ties to match). MAB offers more creativity and encourages their customers to choose items that are "outside the box". He offers really cool designer linings as well as different colored button holes and even stitching.

I personally have two MAB suits and I'm waiting to be fitted for my Imparali suit. I'm also going to purchase a Bespoke winter coat from MAB this coming season. I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

My Favorite Vittorio J Necktie

As the lead designer of an up and coming necktie company, I frequently get asked which one of my ties is my favorite. Its a pretty easy question to answer considering I named this tie after my very own mother!

This tie is definitely the Cristina Tie. (It doesn't hurt that is one of the best selling Vittorio J ties out there.)

Checks, in my opinion, are the hardest ties to design. This one took me a whole month to perfect. The pattern itself is pretty simple but the color combo took forever to figure out.

I design ties on paper first before we put it on silk. Normally, there is only a 5% chance a design will be part of a collection but I knew immediately that this one was a winner. I just love the way the purples on this tie pop out. Looks especially great with my custom grey suit from Michael Andrews Bespoke.

This tie is sold out at the moment but I am planning to replenish my collection with this tie.
What do you all think? Love or hate?
